This project is my exploration into using new technology solutions to answer classic design problems. This project explores the use of VR and AR to create assessibility options for Timeout Tokyo, a travel magazine. The final results are conceptualized demos. I worked on this project during my freshman year of college

Virtual Reality

The goal of the demo is to create a sense of space where the user can get a taste of Tokyo before arriving in person. Users will get a slightly different experience dependent on whether they are using VR or observing it through a browser.

The top images show how viewers might see it in VR. While the below images show how viewers might see it in a browser. With less concern for motion sickness, more textual information can be present.

Augmented Reality

The AR functionality is meant to aid the VR experience by assisting in wayfinding through a 3D recreation of specific districts or nearby locals. The projects below show the conceptualization of this idea on a small scale.

Physical Media

For the constructed headband, I created art for a tokyo city display. Inside you get a better view of some of the nature surrounding Tokyo with hints of the cherry blossom trees. The logo is displayed on the side so that customers can still see it when it is in its sleeve.

Process

When starting this project, I researched the brand in question, analyzing the design language and hierarchy of information. I then created a user persona for the marketed articles.

Conclusion

This project was a good introduction into challenging myself with coding for system design. It allowed me to consider how we can use new technology to open new doors with pre-existing brands. From this project I learned how to extract the core identity of a brand and introduce it in new ways.
